Shane & Gabe have a dream. A dream to host the raddest festival that ever existed (enter Mountain Man Fest) And certainly the first of its kind in upstate New York. However, Shane & Gabe have no money :( So they worked their butts off and contacted a dozen plus talented bands. Some really big and busy bands. Some smaller but growing, and just as talented. Bands from this country, bands from the west coast, bands from abroad. They also contacted this Awesome record label. Because they are best. After a couple weeks of confusion with said excellent bands and the label, they began to come to an agreement. The bands wanted to play the show, and they committed to play the festival without any money up front.

That is right. They are in. They are committed.

These bands are such good people, they're willing to trust that you awesome fans will raise the money to bring it all together. And together we will.

The slate of bands lined up for The Mountain Man Fest includes Phantogram, Islands, Real Estate, Pill Wonder, HEALTH, Woods, Family Portrait, Julian Lynch, Summer Camp, Cults, Eternal Summers, Memoryhouse, and Yip Yip.

The backers say they need $65,000 to put on the all-day festival. A pledge of $35 or more gets a ticket (they'd need about 1,900 people to pledge at that level to reach $65k). The funding deadline is May 12.

The all-day festival is planned for July 24 at the Saratoga City Center.

HUNDREDS of old photographs from the decaying cardboard box. Yes, the box from the very old bus in the woods across the street from my apartment. And I couldn't believe what these images were of! See for yourself:

Photographs of the Korean War! The explicit destruction in these images is so unbelievable; this glimpse into a time 50 years past leaves my mouth agape (well, metaphorically speaking.)

A box of old war photographs, right across the street? I couldn't help but wonder what the backstory was. Here are some of the other objects I found, which help give an idea of just who the person behind all this might be:

Shell map of NYC (it says NJ, but...it's not a map of NJ, clearly)

Transit map of Chicago

A book, the title of which has been cut off. However, when cutting, the person also snipped through the first few pages. When flipping through, I couldn't help but notice the funny juxtapositions--for example, this one here, of a sexy lady riding something, with lots of people running around below, and a caption up top that reads: "In Your Mind's Eye."

A stamp, with rearrangeable rubber letters

A novel...in German!

A return envelope to some sort of patent office

Drawings of electrical circuits (this is one of a handful)

Film!! Unused rolls of Verichrome Pan film that expired in 1959!

It looks like a box of photo paper, doesn't it? Had me fooled, too. Until I opened it...

So...what you are supposed to do with this little kit, is to place a stencil over a tiny piece of photo-sensitive paper. You then slide that into the brown rectangular frame where you see the blue text, close the top flap, and let it expose in the sun. Voila! A primitive process of developing photographs. I am pretty sure this was probably a kid's toy.

These little photos were in the bottom of the tiny box (you can see them in the box on the right in the previous picture). Also, that isn't a real dollar...it's a photograph of a dollar.

There is so much other stuff in the box, but I put it all back in the bus after I photographed it. Each of these objects plays its part in hinting at a narrative. Who was the man behind all these treasures? I feel compelled to find out. However, maybe the mystery is just as valuable as the truth.*

Found: Time Capsule

Ever searched your house for your glasses, only to realize that they were sitting right there on your nose? Sometimes we miss those things which are most obvious.

Last weekend, I noticed a very old school bus in the woods up the street from my apartment. I've lived here for almost a year, and somehow managed not to see it all that time! Baffled at my own unawareness, I grabbed my camera and went to explore.

I couldn't figure out exactly what the transformed space had been used for. Glass jars lined the sides...some broken, some not. There was tons of stuff, just sitting there, waiting for something to happen. The long worktables with drawers along the right side of the bus led me to believe that this functioned as some sort of workspace. But for what?

Well, I went back today to investigate further. After spending some time checking out the old stuff (most of it not terribly interesting), I came across a box that was nearly closed, but not quite. Peeling back the decaying cardboard, the saturated red and yellow inks glared out at me...KODAK. I could barely contain myself! I reached my hand in, and the very first thing I pulled out was a roll of unused film that expired in 1959...

Roman Vishniac: History Through a Camera

It is late fall. Mrs. Vishniac has retrieved some flowers from the outdoors before the cold weather mercilessly dismissed them. Roman Vishniac first met his wife Edith in 1931 in Berlin. "She is unbelievable. I took one look and fell in love with her. She looked like a saint. She is very unusual. We never had a disagreement in 54 years." With the mention of Edith's name he let loose a deep joyful giggle. Vishniac laughed only once during our meeting.

Every other year Vishniac travels to Germany to visit the gravesite of his grandfather Wolf Vishniac. Taking his key he opens the old rusted gates of the cemetery. Once inside he cleans off the gravesite and cuts back the overgrown foliage; if the tombstone has fallen he repositions it. "Once I am gone no one will come to do this."

Roman Vishniac was born on Aug. 19, 1897 in a small town outside Leningrad. Vishniac's father was a Zionist who organized the first Zionist congress for his friend Theodore Hertzl. Vishniac's mother and father were founders of the early ORT society. As a young medical student Vishniac worked to organize the Jewish community to aid the many thousands of Jews who suffered as a result of the pogroms. There is only one time when Vishniac could remember the Jews of Russia being treated humanely, and that was from March to October of 1917 under the rule of Kerensky. "In Russia the anti-Semitism is the strongest; it is in their blood." Shortly after the Russian Revolution the Vishniac family immigrated to Berlin.

Once in Berlin Vishniac began to record the life of the Jewish communities with his camera.

The Nazis believed Vishniac was a Jewish spy. "For photography I was very often put in prison. If I succeeded by bribery to buy myself free then I could photograph again." Vishniac had covered over 5.000 miles by the time he left Europe in 1941...

Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.

Do you recall the blogpost about the great, rusty-voiced Vietnam vet with the used furniture shop in Cohoes? Many readers have mentioned that it was one of their favorite posts. Well, good news folks, he's still there!

And just this weekend, he told me a story...

Every night when Jimmy Durante signed off from The Jimmy Durante Show, the last thing he said was, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are." Who was Mrs. Calabash? Nobody ever really knew the answer.

According to the story, back in the days before Jimmy Durante became Jimmy Durante, he had some work playing ragtime piano. Every day when he went to his job, there was a beautiful and well-respected woman, and every day, he fell more and more in love with her. One day, in spite of the big nose for which he became known, he got up the confidence and asked this woman to marry him. She turned him down.

History holds that somewhere along the way, Jimmy Durante scored his big break, got radio and television airtime, and even his own prime time show. He never forgot about that beautiful lady, though, even though he didn't see or hear of her for many years.

That lady--Mrs. Calabash, she did watch his show. Every night, after mixing with folks like Frank Sinatra and Eddie Jackson, when Jimmy'd say, "Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are," she knew he was talking to her.

Well, Jimmy married--first Jeanne Olsen, then Margie Little. Many years later, he saw Mrs. Calabash again. As the time had slipped away, so too had her good looks. Life had not been kind to her.

And so, though he continued on his own path, Jimmy Durante supported Mrs. Calabash, for the rest of her life.

Wessner's Wunderkammer

Wikipedia describes the wunderkammer as "a cabinet of curiosities," the collection and display of objects that are unique or uncommon. Inside one of these rooms, one might have found objects so diverse as a tortoise shell from the coast of Africa, a rare mineral from China, or a sketch of a foreign person with a deformity. The first instances of this mode of display are known to have been during the 16th century. (Read here to learn more.) During this era of fervent exploration, wunderkammern were a means by which people attempted to organize and make sense of what they found in their travels. Perhaps a person had no idea what the things in his cabinet of wonders were, but that was what was so fabulous. These objects were longing for stories.

Somewhere on the way up a very old mountain in Vermont, there is a little shop teeming with such curiosities. The name of this place is Wessner's, and according to the hand-painted sign, they sell hardware and tools. Going there is like stepping into another world--a place suspended somewhere in between order and chaos. Ronnie, a little old man with a white beard, will most likely be sitting in the very same spot, in the very same brown chair, watching the very same little TV set. The sun always filters in through filmy windows, making the floating particles of dust visible in the streams of light. Though the building is small, there are actually many rooms--one leading to another, and another. It almost seems like you aren't allowed to explore back in those rooms, but you are, and it is there that half the mystery is to be found...

Political campaign memorabilia from unknown politicians. Trucker hats from companies that went under in the 70s. Faded stickers for an electronics security company called LOUDMOUTH. Thirty or more Japanese WWII rifles with a sign saying "Not for sale. Don't ask." Buckets of keys that will never again unlock the doors for which they were made. This is the stuff of Wessner's, and Ronnie probably hasn't seen half of it. But I bet if you asked him about anything there, he'd have a damn good explanation of what it is. This is his wunderkammer.

Eclipse, Myanmar

Check out this composite image of a solar eclipse over Myanmar, which occurred on January 15th.

Though the moon passed in front of the sun, it was too far from the Earth to completely hide it. Instead, what was seen appeared as a 'ring of fire'--a bright circle of light emanating from behind the dark face of the moon. The eclipse was the longest of the millenium, lasting approximately 3 hours 30 minutes.

Remembered best as that itty bitty little lady full of gusto, it is hard to believe that Shirley Temple is now 81 years old! No, it isn't her birthday; I just found this out and decided she's worth mention any day of the year. Never mind age; 76 years later the following video is as fantastic as it was back when your parents and grandparents were watching it on period TV sets. Maybe tube TVs have been replaced by HD flat screens, but certain things never get old...

Discovery: Abandoned Mill, CT

While driving with a friend in Connecticut, I saw an old mill set back quite a distance from the road. Surrounded by a chain-link fence, the blaring orange NO TRESPASSING signs did little to welcome passersby. My friend's sister recalled that this old mill was soon to be torn down.

If that wasn't enough of an invitation to check it out, nothing would have been. Camera in hand, I walked the periphery around the fence to find that a gate had been left open. In I slipped to find an entire complex of buildings--some in good shape, some merely exoskeletons. The ones that remained in tact were all boarded and locked up; the only way to get in was through a broken window pane...

The interior, a long vast space of columns and painted brick walls, still housed many of the old machines and wire from the industrial period. The light was dim but remarkable, diffused through windows tarnished with the sediment of a hundred years.

I snapped away. Here are some of the images:

Turns out that the complex is the site of the former Gilbert and Bennett wire manufacturing company. It began in the early 1800's as a horsehair processing plant (read more here if curious), but when the company owners realized the inefficiency of the material, they turned instead to wire. From here, wire cloth was born, and continued to be manufactured, until the company's closure in 1989. The following image of the complex was taken in the 1920s:

The Fall 2009 issue of Aperture Magazine featured an incredible series called Urban Archaeology by photographer Andrew Moore, documenting the "surreal decay" of the city of Detroit.

In a 2007 interview, Moore said:

I have to admit that one of the aspects of being a photographer I enjoy most is the opportunity to play both detective and spy. As a child, I seem to have been attracted to forbidden places. It actually got me into quite a bit of trouble later when I was a teenager...

Moore's series of images each function as sensitive portraits of places, prompting the viewer to consider a range of elements that, when shown together, contribute to an expressed sense of identity. Head over to his website to see his work!

Inspired by a recent project at UVM, Keith Petri, President of the Skidmore College Photography Club (of which I am a member), carried out the production and sales of the Skidmore Spur, a nude club calendar, to raise funds to be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Featuring a photo of a new college club for each month of the year, objects were placed strategically to conceal private parts. So far, calendar sales have generated over $5000 in revenues, and the club anticipates even more.

Hunkey-dorey and everybody leaves happy, right? Not exactly. After seeing the calendar, the local chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation rejected the Photography Club's donation of $5000, claiming that they were not willing to accept monies procured by such racy means. The average cost to fulfill a child's 'wish' is approximately $7300. In rejecting the Photo Club's donation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation chose to refuse funds that would pay for the greater cost to fulfill the wish of one child. The Photography Club is now looking to donate the revenues to a different cause.

In thinking about the recent events, I am reminded of a project I encountered while studying abroad. In Sicilia (southern Italy), properties seized from the Mafia are being redistributed to young farmers and entrepeneurs. As quoted from this article, the goal is to "create employment and give honest Sicilians a chance to benefit from estates once controlled by Sicily's most notorious criminals."

It is important to draw a distinction here between what has transpired with the Photography Club, and with the redistribution of lands in Sicilia. The Skidmore Spur project has no smatterings of malfeasance at any point in its history; its pure aim is to help a worthy cause. Conversely, in Sicilia, former iniquities are being transformed into opportunities for positive growth. Given the recent turn of events, the situation with the Make-A-Wish Foundation is undoubtedly more controversial.

Nevertheless, we are brought to the question...Should a charitable organization reject donations based on the means by which these funds were acquired? Do such rejections hinder the ability of the organization to effect positive change?

Recommendation: Ólafur Arnalds

The past few years have seen the genesis of some really incredible music by emerging minimalist composers, who have continued faintly in the style of artists such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley. One such composer is the Brazilian Andrei Machado. His slowly unwinding album Lacuna from 2008 features gentle, atmospheric piano strokes. His more recent release, Étant, is also an incredible listen.

One of the most phenomenal contemporary minimalist composers of today (according to me) ironically began as a drummer for a hardcore metal band in Iceland. Sometime around 2007, Ólafur Arnalds dropped his drumsticks and instead focused his abilities on composition. In 2009, he produced Found Songs--each day, for seven days, composing a new piece and posting it online for free. One of his listeners put together the following video for the song of day 7, Ljósið:

Ken Burns Event!

For all those of you who live in or will be anywhere near to Manchester VT in mid-December, this may be of interest to you:

On December 15th at 7pm, Northshire Bookstore will be featuring Ken Burns. You have likely heard all about National Parks: America's Best Idea (especially if you listen to NPR), a PBS documentary series directed by Burns on the history of America's parks. Tickets are $50 and include a copy of the accompanying book (a very good deal- it sells for $50 anyways). This event will be happening at the Equinox Hotel in Manchester, VT. Purchase tickets here.

Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales – from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska - The National Parks: America's Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background - rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

The Mushy Apple: An Unfortunate Snacking Experience

Don't be fooled!

We all have certain things we simply DO NOT enjoy. There are few that rate so highly on my list as biting into a deceivingly delicious-looking apple, only to find that instead of a great crunch, you are instead met by a sensation somewhat similar to that felt while eating mashed potatoes. This is great if you are eating mashed potatoes, but not apples; people seem to generally agree with me. As a daily apple-eater, I have had this experience far too many times.

However terrible we all might consider the formerly described snacking experience to be, I do have a particular friend who prefers a soft apple [GASP]. I know, I know, I don't get it either; as she is the founder and an executive member of the GWU Food Justice Alliance, this seems like blasphemy. I think Juliana (aforementioned friend) receives more complimentary bags of apples than anybody else I know, and this is a big deal coming from someone who used to work at an orchard (i.e., me). I put up with this strange preference, though I must admit that watching her bite into the mush evokes in me a feeling similar to that experienced when hearing nails scraped on a chalkboard.

After all this slander, I ought to let you know about Jules' project with the Food Justice Alliance, so be sure to check that out (and possibly copy her?)

In conclusion, I wish a crispy apple for each and every one of you. Well, with one exception...

Which came first: photography or plastic? Would you know...it's photography!

(first photo ever taken, 1826 by Nicéphore Niepce...what a name)

"The first man-made plastic was created by Alexander Parkes who publicly demonstrated it at the 1862 Great International Exhibition in London. The material called Parkesine was an organic material derived from cellulose that once heated could be molded, and retained its shape when cooled." (quoted from Mary Bellis's History of Plastics)

However, Charles Goodyear (tires, anybody?) invented the first rubber in 1839; this material can safely be called a precursor to plastic. 1839, hmm... isn't that the year that Sir John Herschel coined the term photography, and the medium became available to the public?

Imagine what cameras (and other things) were made of before the days of lightweight synthetics and faux metallic finishes?!

From Parkesine, we went to the dense and heavy celluloid. (Fun fact: in the process of trying to find a material other than ivory from which to make billiard balls, John Wesley Hyatt spilled a bottle of collodian. With a couple of steps after to perfect the process, this accident gave birth to the first type of flexible camera film!)

Just before the turn of the century, people started experimenting with formaldehyde resins, resulting in the invention of bakelite. (I have mentioned items made of bakelite twice on this blog: first, the clock I found in Cohoes that needs the cord replaced, and more recently, the Argus camera my mom picked up in Montreal)

Today, we live in a world of easily crunchable Poland Spring bottles, papery shopping bags, Silly Putty, Rubbermaid containers, and Gladware. Are we really as Glad as the lady on the commercial?

What I am getting at here is that the vast majority of consumer plastics of today generally...suck. There are exceptions of course, but most of the material used in the creation of mass-market items will eventually become a problem as future uses have not been considered by the manufacturer. Actually, it is a huge problem already- most forms of plastic take over 1,000 years to decompose, and spend the majority of that time dormant in landfills. Care to build a home for your happy family on this sexy pile of garbage?

Please, do not be mistaken! Great new plastics ARE being produced. For instance, PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable material made of fermented plant starch, and has been showing up on the consumer market in forms ranging from foam, to electronics, to disposable silverware.

Nevertheless, part of the problem here is that as a culture, we are so attached to convenience that we have incorporated a myriad of disposable items into the very fabric of our lives. And, as you may have noticed, we are really paying the price.

I have a challenge for you! Next time you are tempted to pick up a set of summery plastic plates at Target, DON'T. Pass up the dorm lamp with multiple bendable bulb arms and temptingly colorful bulb covers. You can get awesome old plates at junk shops; if that doesn't appeal to you, pay for eight good ones you really like rather than some crappy ones here and there as you need them. You can also make a lamp out of almost anything, and outfit it with your own lampshades. Check out this recent book by Judy Lake, the official Lampshade Lady (she happens to be a family friend...a number of the shots are taken at my house in VT).

You can change other things, too, not only your lamps and plates. You don't need everything, all at once! Buy stuff of higher quality, in lesser quantities.

Also, isn’t crooked spectacles a great double entendre? Check out this hilarious and very crooked spectacle!

Just out of curiosity, I decided to quiz my word processor as to the definition of ‘double entendre.’ Here’s what it thinks:

My photo professor has again posted successful images on his blog, and this one has been selected! The shots are from our portrait assignment, and this was my figurative submission. Check it out alongside some really stellar shots taken by my peers.

Can't stop listening to Bach: The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites by the master himself, Yo-Yo Ma. Quite possibly the most phenomenal music ever produced by a cello. Hearing the instrument alone, you can't help but notice what a clear, pure sound it can produce! Suite 1 in G Major, BMV 1007/Prélude is spectacular.

Junk Shop Finds: Cohoes, NY

This weekend, I found myself in the post-industrial city of Cohoes, NY. Home to the second largest waterfall in the state of NY, and also home to what was once the largest textile mill in the United States. There is too much interesting stuff about this place to go into here, so I'll leave it to you to investigate.

Found one of the most marvelous junk shops I've been to in a while, run by a chain-smoking Vietnam vet. Great kind of guy: voice rusty like an old car on the highway, politically incorrect, serious respiratory issues, oddly wise. All I had to sacrifice for some interesting conversation and a bunch of sweet old stuff was the clean odor of the wool dress I was wearing and the health of my lungs. No problem! Sign me up.

"Sometimes, people come in, and I swear, none of it will sell for weeks, and then somebody'll come along and buy all the ugly stuff," he explained to me upon the exit of a group of people that only spoke Spanish. "It's like, they only want the ugly furniture! Fine with me, I guess."

While they were still in the shop, the old man came over to where I was, sighed, flicked his ash, and said, "I have no idea what the hell they're sayin'."

Got amazing stuff, for $20. Here are two of my best finds:
